Research states that 4 out of 10 students are bullied online. To address this issue the Chicago Board of Education has passed a new Student Code of Conduct which states that cyberbullying is just as serious of an offense as drug use, gang activity, aggravated assault, and burglary. Thus, these new laws state that children engaging in cyberbullying will either be suspended or expelled from school depending upon the severity of the offense. These new laws also call for a police investigation of the cyberbullying incident. Kim Janssen of the Chicago Sun Times describes cyberbullying as, “digitally placing classmates’ heads onto other people’s bodies, leaving abusive messages on Facebook profiles, e-mailing X-rated images and inciting violence via text message are all part of the modern school bully’s arsenal.” To read more about this new law read the full article here.
